THE CODE OF PRACTICE FOR PASTORAL CARE OF INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
CODE The Electrotechnical Education Centre Ltd (ETEC) has agreed to observe and be bound by the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students published by the Minister of Education. http://www.minedu.govt.nz/goto/international
IMMIGRATION Full details of visa and permit requirements, advice on rights to employment in New Zealand while studying, and reporting requirements are available through the New Zealand Immigration Service, and can be viewed on their website at
http://www.immigration.govt.nz
ELIGIBILITY FOR HEALTH SERVICES Most international students are not entitled to publicly funded health services while in New Zealand. If you receive medical treatment during your visit, you may be liable for the full costs of that treatment. Full details on entitlements to publicly-funded health services are available through the Ministry of Health, and can be viewed on their website at
http://www.moh.govt.nz
ACCIDENT INSURANCE The Accident Compensation Corporation provides accident insurance for all New Zealand citizens, residents and temporary visitors to New Zealand, but you may still be liable for all other medical and related costs. Further information can be viewed on the ACC website at
http://www.acc.co.nz
MEDICAL AND TRAVEL INSURANCE International students must have appropriate and current medical and travel insurance while studying in New Zealand.
STUDENT INSURANCE
All international students are required, under Code of Practice for Pastoral Care of International Students, to have current travel and medical insurance for the duration of their programme of study in New Zealand. If you do not have insurance, ETEC can help you chose and purchase an appropriate plan.
Insurance is required as most international students are not entitled to publicly funded health services while in New Zealand, and if you receive medical treatment during your visit you may have to pay the full cost of that treatment (for further information see
http://www.moh.govt.nz). The Accident Compensation Corporation provides accident insurance for all New Zealand citizens, residents and temporary visitors to New Zealand, but you may be liable for all other medical and related costs (see
http://www.acc.co.nz for more information).
If you are an international student entering New Zealand on a student visa, insurance must cover you from the day you leave your home country to the expiry date of your visa plus one week.
If you are an international student already in New Zealand, the insurance must cover you from the date of your enrolment to the expiry date of your visa plus one week.
If you leave New Zealand before the insurance expiry date you may be able to claim a refund for the unused portion of your insurance.
You will be required to show evidence of appropriate and current insurance cover as part of your enrolment process. All policy documentation must be provided in English.
When choosing a plan you should consider the following:
MEDICAL CARE Does the plan cover you for inpatient, outpatient and day care treatment?
MEDICAL EVACUATION COVER Are you covered in the extreme circumstances you may need to be taken for treatment outside of your country of study or removed for health reasons?
TRAVEL INSURANCE Does the plan include travel insurance, such as theft or loss of luggage? (many plans offered to international students include travel insurance which means you don’t have to purchase two separate policies).
LOSS OF TUITION FEES Does the plan cover you for your tuition fees if due to unforeseen circumstances you have to cancel your course?
WORKPLACEMENT COVER (COMPULSORY FOR ETEC STUDENTS) Does the plan have cover for you while you are in a work placement environment. You should take note that any plan that does will have a 10% to 20% loading (You will have to pay ate least 10% more than you would for a normal plan).
FLEXIBLE PAYMENT OPTIONS Does the plan have ways to make your payment easier for you? Credit card, bank transfer, cheque or the on line payment facility?
